  • Lady Beavers sweep Brown Mackie

  • Considering their similar records, one might have expected a pair of close games between Pratt Community College and Brown Mackie as the teams squared off Monday in a softball doubleheader at Angood Field. And that’s exactly what happened. Pratt took both ends of the twin bill by identical counts of 7-6.

  • Considering their similar records, one might have expected a pair of close games between Pratt Community College and Brown Mackie as the teams squared off Monday in a softball doubleheader at Angood Field. And that’s exactly what happened. Pratt took both ends of the twin bill by identical counts of 7-6.
In game one, Pratt was up 4-3 going into the bottom of the 5th. Brenda Novelo doubled and scored on an RBI single by Taylor Oldham (who went 4-4 in the game) to go up 5-3. Brown Mackie (not to be confused with the similarly named Mack Brownie) got the run back in the top of the 6th and appeared to be on the verge of a big inning, but some nice Beaver defense squelched the rally. With runners on base, a Mackie Lion smacked a single scoring the runner from 3rd and other runners were moving up, but a well-executed cut-off play from CF Kelsie Lundgren to 1B Oldham to 3B Novelo resulted in a put-out of the Mackie baserunner at 3rd to end the threat.
After PCC went quietly in the 6th, Mackie plated a pair in their top of the 7th to take a 6-5 lead, but PCC refused to fold. Novelo again led off the inning with a double and was plated on an RBI single by Sam Garrison to send the game to extras. Ely Ortega had relieved Raushell Baca on the mound in the 6th inning for PCC, and set the Mackies down in the top of the 8th.
Lead-off hitter Kelsie Lundgren singled and stole 2nd to open PCCs half of the 8th. Then, with 2 outs, Novelo looped a ball into centerfield that doinked off the diving center fielder’s glove and fell in for a hit as the speedy Lundgren raced home from 2nd carrying the winning run in her pocket. Game one went to PCC 7-6.
In the nightcap, PCC and Brown Mackie passed the lead back and forth four times, but Pratt finally prevailed by another 7-6 score. Brenda Novelo had the decisive blow, a 2-run big fly that also scored Rachael Schoonmaker. Lundgren did her job as a table-setter, going 4-4 in the contest with a pair of doubles. Sam Garrison had a multi-hit, multi-RBI game as well. Schoonmaker’s RBI double accounted for the balance of the PCC scoring.
Ely Ortega again got the win in relief of Baca, pitching the final two innings and allowing no runs.
PCC has two more doubleheaders this week, at Hesston on Tuesday and with #1 ranked Butler on Thursday. Currently, the Beavers are 13-13 in the Jayhawk, and 21-23 overall.
