  • The Sterling Black Bears found themselves severely overmatched against the Pratt High School softball team last Thursday in a doubleheader at Green Sports Complex. Pratt won both games by run-rule: 11-1 (six innings) in the opener and 17-0 (three innings) in the nightcap.
In the opener, Brittnee Hill gave up 1 earned run, issued 2 walks and fanned 12 in upping her season record to 3-1.
Hayden Pixler went 2-3 with a double, 2 runs and 2 stolen bases. Bailey Gillig was 1-1 and reached three more times on 2 BB and an HBP. She stole a base and scored two runs. Brittnee Hill helped herself by collecting a double and 3 RBIs. Destani Garten also had a nice game at the dish, 2-3 with a double, 2 runs, 2 SB and 2 RBIs. 11-1 PHS in the opener.
In the nightcap, Pratt pitcher Kinzie Spurgin twirled a no-hitter, facing only 10 Sterling batters. Meanwhile, the Greenbacks were piling on the runs at an alarming rate, scoring 6 in the first inning, 8 in the second and their 3 runs in the 3rd put them over the run-rule and the game mercifully ended, 17-0 Pratt.
“It was good to get to play, it had been almost two weeks,” said PHS head coach Mike Forshee. “We were a little rusty early on, but things came around and the girls made the necessary adjustments.”
“Our defense was very good all evening,” Forshee continued. “We made zero errors in both games. Brittnee (Hill) had a good game in the circle and is getting closer to 100%. Kinzie (Spurgin) threw a good game, keeping the ball down and getting a lot of ground balls.”
The PHS girls traveled Monday to Hillsboro to make up a contest lost earlier to the weather, and will play Nickerson Tuesday and Haven Friday in what will be a busy week for the Frogs.
