The Pratt Community College softball season came to an end Sunday afternoon at Angood Field as the Lady Beavers were swept by the visiting Hutchinson Blue Dragons in the first round of the Region VI playoffs. Hutch upended the Beavers 8-6 in the opener and captured the nightcap 6-2 to sweep the best-of-three series.
PCC appeared to be in good shape in the first game, leading 6-3 after 5 innings. But then Hutch put up a crooked number in the top of the 6th to seize control of the game against the stunned Beavers. The Blue Dragons walloped a 3-run homer and added a 2-run blast to go up 8-6, and the game ended with that score.
Kelsie Lungren went 2-4 with a double and a run-scored, and Rachael Schoonmaker hit a two-run single to pace the Beaver effort in game one.
In the nightcap, Sam Garrison went 3-3 with a double in a losing cause, as the rest of the Beavers couldn’t get the bats untracked. Hutch scored a pair in the 2nd and another pair in the 3rd, and were never headed, eventually downing the Beavers 6-2.
Between games, sophomores Brenda Novelo, Kelsie Lundgren, Rachael Schoonmaker and Taylor Oldham were honored for the their 2-year careers at PCC.
The Lady Beavers end their season with an overall record of 21-27 and a conference record of 13-13 good for 7th place out of 14 schools in the 14-school Jayhawk East.
