  • The Pratt High School softball team had a busy early part of the week, splitting a make-up double- header at Hillsboro on Monday, then sweeping Nickerson at home on Tuesday.
Against Hillsboro, Pratt dropped the opener 5-1 but won the nightcap 6-5 in a squeaker.
In game one, the Lady Greenbacks didn’t execute very well either offensively or defensively. Although outhitting the Trojans 7-4, they only managed to plate one run, leaving 8 runners on base. As an example, the Frogs left the bases loaded in the 7th to end the game.
Bailey Gillig was 2-2 with 2 BBs and a stolen base; pitcher Brittnee Hill helped her own cause going 2-3 with an RBI; Savanah Buntemeyer was also 2-3 and Lauren Rambat had a double. But the Greenbacks were largely unable to convert their chances into runs on the scoreboard.
Defensively, the Greenbacks committed 3 errors that contributed to Hillsboro being able to tally 5 runs on only 4 hits.
“We had opportunities offensively and we weren’t disciplined enough to do what we needed to do,” PHS head coach Mike Forshee said. “Hillsboro is a good team and we just have to be better prepared in all phases of the game to have success against teams like that.”
Pratt was able to exact some measure of revenge in the finale, escaping with a 6-5 win. Kinzie Spurgin started on the bump for Pratt, and was relieved later by Hill who earned her 4th win of the season against two defeats.
Both sides put up a 4-spot in the 3rd frame to highlight a 5-5 score at the end of 5. The eventual winning run was driven in by a Savanah Buntemeyer single in the top of the 6th, and scored by Lauren Rambat who had reached on an HBP.  Game 2: 6-5 PHS.
Table-setter Rambat was 3-4 with a double and 2 runs; Buntemeyer went 3-4 with 1 run and 3 ribbies including the gamewinner; Bailey Gillig had a pair of RBIs to go with her 2-4; and Hayden Pixler drove in a run with her 1-4.
“We were more focused at the plate,” Forshee said of his team’s improved offensive performance in the nightcap. “We attacked the softball. It was good to get a win against a good club.”
The Lady Greenbacks dispatched Nickerson rather handily in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Brittnee Hill tossed a 2-hitter and the Frogs pounded out 13 hits on their way to a 12-0 run-rule victory in game one.
In the nightcap, Kinzie Spurgin pitched the victory. PHS spanked 11 hits and took advantage of 4 Panther errors to win by a 9-2 count.
“It was a good doubleheader for us,” Coach Forshee said.
