It was tough sledding for the Skyline Thunderbirds track teams at the immense Hodgeman County Invitational on Tuesday. With 21 schools in attendance, the meet is larger than a regional. Still, some T-Birds won medals.
The girls team finished 5th with 45 points behind winners Kiowa County (95). Skyline tallied 8 points to finish in 17th place on the boys side behind victorious LaCrosse (111).
Sprints were the strongest events for the girls. Morgan Flowers won the 100m (12.56) and Jessica DeWeese took the 200m (26.56). DeWeese also finished 2nd in the 100m (12.85). Those two worked with Betsy Giles and Ashley Koirth to take 3rd in the 4x100 (52.62). Flowers, DeWeese and Giles added Brooke Fisher to take 6th in the 4x400 (4:34).
Fisher got the bronze in the 3200m (13:49). Koirth got 4th in the shot (30-10) and Shelby Bender took 7th in javelin (96-11) to round out the girls’ placings.
Roman Ibarra was the only Thunderbird boy to score, taking 3d in the 1600m (4:45) and 5th in the 3200m (10:54).
