  • Pratt native Payson Maydew , a freshman at Emporia State, finished third to garner All Conference status in the decathlon at the MIAA track and field championships held May 3-5 at Fort Hays State University. Cool windy conditions on both Day 1 and Day 2 of the ten event decathlon added an additional challenge to the already grueling competition. Fourteen athletes from the eleven team MIAA started the competition. Maydew performed consistently over the two days finishing in the top five in 8 of the 10 events. He sat in 5th place overall heading into the final event, the 1500 meter run. He finished 2nd in the 1500, running a career best 4:33.7 to jump two spots and onto the awards stand. Emporia States’ men finished 5th in the team standings. Pittsburg State won the men’s team title.
