The Pratt High School softball team helped their three seniors celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday by soundly thrashing visiting Kingman. The Eagles never touched home plate all evening as Pratt took the opener 6-0 and the nightcap 15-0 in a run-rule laugher.
Seniors Kinzie Spurgin P/Inf., Hayden Pixler OF and Taylor Fuhr 3B were major contributors in the doubleheader sweep, but they had plenty of help from the team’s underclassmen as well.
In game one, Fuhr started a 3rd inning rally reaching on an error. Kelsey Potter-Smith executed the sac bunt and Lauren Rambat hit an RBI single. Savanah Buntemeyer executed another sac bunt. Bailey Gillig drew a base on balls and Dakota Jones knocked in the pair with a triple. Jones scored the inning’s 4th run when the Eagles threw the ball up into the cheap seats.
That would be all the runs Pratt would need, but they did tack on single tallies in the 4th and 6th innings to discourage any Kingman hopes of a comeback.
Offensively, Dakota Jones went 3-3 with a triple, a run and 2 RBIs. Lauren Rambat was 2-4 with a triple, a run and 2 RBIs. Kinzie Spurgin went 1-2 with a run and an HBP.
Brittnee Hill threw a shutout for her 7th win in the season. She recorded 8 Ks and only issued 1 free pass. Pratt prevailed in game one 6-0.
The finale was all Pratt as Hill faced the minimum—9 batters— in 3 innings of work, giving up just one hit to pick up her 8th win of the year. “Brittnee was in control in the circle,” observed PHS head coach Mike Forshee. “She moved the ball around and her curveball was tough.”
Meanwhile, the Frogs were scoring early and often, putting up a 6-spot in the first frame and adding 2 more in the second. Up 8-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd, PHS put Kingman out of their misery by putting up another crooked number, invoking the run-rule.
Fuhr again led off what would become a big 3rd inning, singling and taking 2nd on a wild pitch. Potter-Smith singled Fuhr home. After a walk to Rambat, Buntemeyer rode one out over the left-center field wall for a 3-run jack. With one out, Jones and Pixler singled, and Breann Becker’s single plated Jones. Batting for the second time in the inning, Fuhr again got a base knock. With two out, Allicia Hall drove Becker home to end the game 15-0.
“ We had a great approach at the plate, and the hitting was contagious,” Coach Forshee said of his team’s offensive onslaught in the nightcap. “Everyone in the line-up had at least one hit. The girls really attacked the ball. 14 hits in 3 innings is outstanding.”
Page 2 of 2 - Offensively, the seniors led the rout: Hayden Pixler was 2-2 with 2 runs and an RBI; Taylar Fuhr was 2-3 with 2 runs and an RBI; Kinzie Spurgin was 2-3 with a run and 3 RBIs.
Also, Savanah Buntemeyer had 3 RBIs with a big fly and Dakota Jones was 2-3 with 2 RBIs.
Pratt’s defense was sharp all evening as well, the Greenbacks committing but a single error in the twin bill.
“Not only was this a good evening in preparation for regionals,” summarized Forshee, “but a fun night for our three seniors— Hayden Pixler, Taylar Fuhr and Kinzie Spurgin. These three have been outstanding players and citizens for Lady Greenback softball for four years and it was great to see this team respond and make it a memorable night.”
The Lady Greenbacks should be brimming with confidence heading into regionals, as they will again host the Lady Eagles in the first round at Green Complex on Monday May 13, 5:30 p.m.
