It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. The Pratt High School baseball team proved that Monday night at Green Complex. After trailing Russell for most of the regional opening round game, Pratt struck for 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th to go ahead 7-4, which was the final score.
Pratt’s first batter of the afternoon, Easton Herring came around to score after reaching via the BB. But it would be a dry spell for the next few innings.
Meanwhile, aided by a close call at the plate that went against the Greenbacks, Russell put up a 4-spot in the top of the second.
Skylar Dean came in to relieve on the bump, and held the Broncos scoreless for the rest of the contest. Pratt had a rally thwarted when a solid line-drive with 2 runners on ended up as a triple play. Resiliently, the Greenbacks came back to plate a pair in the 5th to draw within 1.
Dakota Venard had a bunt single in the 6th, then Easton Herring walked, and Shane McEachern was HBP. Skylar Dean got the game tied with a sac fly plating Venard. Afer a walk to Jarod Gilmore, Drake Evert lashed a single to RF which ended up clearing the bases when the right fielder misplayed the ball. Game: 7-4 PHS when Russell couldn’t answer in the 7th. Round 2 is Wednesday at Ulysses.
