  • The life and time of a guy called Jim —
Born on Sept. 17, 1939, weighing in at 10 pounds and 28 inches long, on the prairie west of Welch, Okla., in Craig County, Jim left his earthly home on June 12, 2013, to go be with our Lord and Savior.
Jim married Dovie Bale on Dec. 21, 1958, in Wilmore. They celebrated 54 years of a long happy marriage.
Jim and Dovie had one daughter, Debra, on Dec. 19, 1960.
Jim is survived by his wife Dovie and daughter, Debbie Hearn; brothers, Howard (Mary) Monroe, Wilmore, and Mike (Penny) Monroe, Salina; and sisters, June Vierthaler, Paris, Ark., and Carol (Vernon) Clark, Garden City; along with many nieces and nephews and many special friends who considered Jim as their adopted dad. He delighted in all of his adopted kids and they looked up to him as a mentor and friend.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James A. Monroe; mother, Hazel (Collins) Monroe; brothers, Earl and Jerry Monroe; and sister, Delphia Monroe Schauf.
Jim spent 33 years servicing irrigation systems. He was the owner of Central Kansas Irrigation. After he closed the irrigation business, he and wife Dovie explored the United States in an 18-wheeler owned by the couple.
Jim loved to fish and spend time with his family. He was the glue that held us all together.
Jim touched the lives of many families and friends and was always there when anyone needed him.
Jim loved to pull jokes and tease everyone around. He always had a smile and gave the best hugs.
Jim always told Dovie when she wanted a kiss it would cost her a quarter. This was their special joke between the two of them.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Iuka United Methodist Church with minister John Hamm and the Rev. Fred Pinkerton officiating. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary. Burial will be in Iuka Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Iuka United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice, in care of the mortuary, 115 E. Fourth, Pratt, KS 67124.
