  • Walking around the halls of Pratt Community College the weeks of June 10 and 17 one might hear comments like 'monkeys and elephants I need your attention over here.' No, the college isn't putting in a zoo, just having a two week summer theatre camp.
This year the summer camp has more than 100 local students who are between the ages of five and 12.
During the day camp, students are getting ready to perform Disney's "The Jungle Book, Jr." on June 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Carpenter Auditorium. When they aren't practicing, students are participating in arts and crafts projects and playing games.
Six year-old Grace Hoffman of Pratt said that she loves the camp experience but that arts and crafts are her favorite part. She then added that she made a bracelet, which she will be wearing during the show.
Along with the bracelets, campers are also making signs to promote the show, which will be hung around town.
"I am really enjoying helping with the camp," said Mindi Popovich, of Pratt. "Theatre made a huge impact in my life because I used to be really shy and now have confidence to meet new people. I wanted to give others that experience by helping."
PCC's performing arts department has numerous opportunities for students to get involved through theatre productions, vocal music and instrumental music. There are two vocal music groups for students to participate in, along with the band groups Beaver Jam and the theatre department, all of which perform multiple times throughout the year.
