The Pratt Gators 12 and Under traveling baseball team took their show on the road last weekend to play in the Derby (KS) Hap Dumont Baseball Tournament—and came home with another championship trophy.
In pool play on Saturday, the Gators first defeated the Topeka Golden Giants in a 10-0 run-rule game. The Gators collected 10 hits and took 5 walks in the offensive onslaught.
Kaden Evert and Wyatt Schrag shared mound duties for Pratt, combining for a 2-hit shut-out with 5 strikeouts in the 4-inning game.
Grant Bolen took the hill in the Gators next match-up against the curiously named Hutch Yotees. In another abbreviated affair, the Gators prevailed 15-2 in 4 innings. Bolen picked up 7 Ks while yielding only 1 BB, and he was strongly supported by the Gators offense, which flexed its extra-base muscle pounding out 6 doubles.
The Gators completed pool play on Saturday with another run-rule game, this time 10-0 over the Mulvane Spartans. Grant Bolen and Caden Blankenship had doubles and Travis Theis a triple to pace the offense.
Wyatt Schrag pitched the first three innings effectively, then Kauy Kuhn relieved in the 4th and fanned the side to close out the Mulvanes.
In Sunday’s bracket play semi-final, the Gators again throttled their opponent in run-rule fashion. This time it was the Rose Hill Shox who were the victims of the 11-0 whipping. Cooper Zenger went 3-3 with a double and Kauy Kuhn tossed a 1-hit shutout for Pratt.
Last week the Gators were narrowly defeated in the Pratt Tournament finals by the Cimarron River Rattlers. The two teams met in the finals of this tournament as well, and this week, the outcome was different.
The Rattlers only score came in the first inning when their lead-off batter walked and later scored on a ground-out.
The Gators scoring came in the 4th inning when Travis Theis hit a wicked hopper that was misplayed by the Rattlers defense. He later scored on a Kauy Kuhn base knock. Kuhn eventually advanced to 3rd and came home with the go-ahead tally when an attempted pick-off throw from the Rattlers’ catcher sailed up the left field line.
Kaden Evert and Travis Theis were on the bump for the Gators, and continued to hold the Rattlers at bay for the rest of the closely contested game.
Ultimately, the Gators prevailed 2-1 over last week’s nemesis, and took home the championship trophy of the Derby Hap Dumont Baseball Tournament.
“The Gators showed up to play ball this weekend,” coach Brian Schrag said. “We hit the ball extremely well and combined it with solid defense and excellent pitching.”
The Gators put together five solid wins, including a payback over the Rattlers, leading into the State Tournament which will be held in Pratt at Green Sports Complex July 12-14.
