  • Volleyball season has been going for six weeks already at Pratt High, if you count summer preparations as part of the season. New head coach Shelby Nesbit has been holding workouts for the Lady Greenbacks since early June.
Nesbit, who served as departed coach Dean Rausch’s assistant for a couple of years, has several goals for her charges this summer.
“I want to bring the kids in and expose them to our new defenses,” she explained. “We also want them to tune up their skills— hitting and passing. This will also let the kids have a chance to get used to my style of coaching.”
Recognizing that she is stepping into what has been a successful program, Coach Nesbit isn’t planning drastic changes in the way the program is run. “Coach Rausch was a good coach,” Nesbit said. “He knew what he was doing. We don’t need to change the way the program was working.”
Of course, Nesbit has her own personality, and that’s what she wants the kids to get used to through the summer workouts. Most of the girls already know her as an assistant, and so there will not be that much of an adjustment curve to deal with.
There have been 24-25 girls attending the workouts on most days, although Nesbit said she expected upwards of 40 to be out for the team once school begins.
Monday through Thursday, the girls report at 6:30 a.m. to go through drills and scrimmaging for about an hour and a half. Then, Tuesday through Thursday for about another hour or hour and a half, the girls do conditioning and hit the weight room.
Some of the girls have been to volleyball camps as individuals already this summer, and Coach Nesbit will have her squad participate in a team camp at Pratt Community College in August as the scholastic year approaches.
As practice broke up on Thursday this week, some of the girls were planning to treat themselves to breakfast at Rick’s Restaurant afterwards. It would be a well-deserved reward for the long hours of hard work that go into ‘off-season’ preparation to be a member of Greenback Volleyball.
