  • Maxine Carroll McKeever, 92, died Aug. 22, 2013 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge.
    She was born Sept. 20, 1920, at Wakefield, the daughter of Noah and Vera Sheppeard Carroll. A long time resident of Medicine Lodge, Maxine was a homemaker. She spent many hours over the years volunteering as a Sunday school teacher, Boy Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader and state president of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority in 1970-71. Maxine loved to paint and she made treasured gifts of many of her paintings by giving them to friends and family members.
    She was a member of the Open Door Fellowship for many years. In her last four years she received great joy and comfort from the services and visits that Pastor Tom Walters provided.
    On May 24, 1938, she married Edward L. Koerner at Wakefield. He died Oct. 24, 1973. On Jan. 1, 1983, she married Hugh K. McKeever at Pratt. He died Dec. 18, 1990.
    Survivors include: two sons, John (Marisa) Koerner of Klute, Texas, and Gary Koerner of Portland, Ore; two daughters, Barbara Little and Bonnie (Larry) Dubbs, all of Medicine Lodge; two brothers Gale (Mary) Carroll of Pratt, and Robert (Jo) Carroll of Monroe, La.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
    Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Noah and Vera Carroll; a brother, Lee Carroll; a sister, Linda Willbanks and a granddaughter, Sabrina Woosley.
    Maxine continued to give herself even in death. She has willed her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center for medical teaching and research. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 31, at the First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, with Pastor Tom Walters presiding.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital or the First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, in care of Larrison Funeral Home, 120 E. Lincoln, Medicine Lodge, KS 67104.
