The Delmar Riney Art Gallery at Pratt Community College will display the work of Elaine Ray as the featured exhibit during the month of September. Ray's photographs feature scenes of nature, automobiles, Pratt firefighters, and more.

Elaine is a native of Pratt. She learned to create at a young age as her mother taught her how to sew and she always kept the bottom drawer in the hall linen closet full of supplies for drawing and making things. Elaine's dad was always fixing and building things and she learned how to pay attention to the details from him. In Pratt High School Elaine had some inspiring art teachers that taught her so many things and while attending Pratt Community College she took all the art classes possible.

Several years ago Elaine enrolled in Marsha Shrack's photography class at PCC and there her love of photography began.

"My favorite part was developing film in the darkroom and seeing the images come to life," said Ray, who is currently enrolled in her fourth class under Stan Reimer at PCC. "We constantly learn new techniques and he challenges us to find the beauty and art in everything we see."

Her style of photography is to fill the frame with close up details. When photographing people she tries to show something that sparks emotion like the close up of hands touching instead of a full portrait. The biggest challenge for Ray, she shares, "is the technical side of photography as our generation did not grow up with a computer at our fingertips, so it is a constant learning process in many ways."

Elaine is married to Keith Ray and they have three grown sons and two grandsons who give her lots of support and subject matter. She is also a volunteer photographer for the City of Pratt Fire Department.

Ray's work will be displayed until September 26. The Delmar Riney Art Gallery is located in the Riney Student Center at Pratt Community College. The hours are Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by appointment. For more information about the gallery or to make an appointment, please call (620) 450-2184.
