  • Two still in hospital from Friday accident

  • Two survivors in the double fatality accident Friday east of Pratt remain hospitalized in Wichita.
    Killed in the accident was Jose Luis Cerda Salazar, 28 of Amarillo, Texas and Jesus Julian Salicido Jr., 39 and also of Amarillo.
    The accident occurred when a 1997 Ford pickup driven by Jose Gerardo Morales-Zavala, 21 of Mexico, failed to yield for a construction sign and broadsided a KOSS Construction Caterpillar water tanker on U.S. 54 just east of 70th Avenue at a highway construction zone.
    A parked 2002 Dodge 2500 was also damaged in the accident. It was unoccupied.
    Morales-Zavala was listed as transported to Pratt Regional Medical Center but he was also listed as "refused treatment" on the Kansas Highway Patrol crash web site.
    The fatalities were in the pickup along with a third passenger, Jose Guadalupe Hernandez-Guzman, 27 of Texas but city unknown, who was transported to Pratt Regional Medical Center then an EagleMed helicopter transferred him to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where he remains in critical condition.
    The driver of the water tanker, 19-year-old Basilio Hernandez, address unknown, was taken to Pratt Regional Medical Center then later transferred to Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita where he is in fair condition.
