  • Frogs open Cruce era with victory

  • It may not have been a thing of beauty, but new Pratt High School head football coach Jamie Cruce and his Greenbacks will take it. In a game dedicated to the memory of their fallen comrade Drake Evert, the Frogs were able to come away with a narrow, come-from-behind 12-8 victory over the Nickerson Panthers in the season opener at Zerger Field Friday night.

When the game was over, the Pratt players rang the victory bell for the first of what is hoped to be many times in the Jamie Cruce era.
It was a game in which PHS played dominant defensively except for one big play, but had a frustrating night on offense. The score could have been more one-sided had the Greenbacks been able to convert more of their offensive opportunities.
The first quarter was marked by the teams punting back and forth to one another, and shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and offensive miscues. It was 0-0 after one stanza.
In the middle of the 2nd quarter, Pratt put together arguably their best drive of the night, a 49 yarder that culminated in a Brandon Ruckle to Shawn Ramos 13 yd. TD pass. That put Pratt up 6-0 at the 4:30 mark after the PAT was blocked.
On their ensuing possession, Nickerson found paydirt as well. At the 2:09 mark Lehman caught a 61-yard reception to put Nickerson up 8-6 at halftime.
On Pratt’s first possession of the second half, Derek Barnard got behind the defense and hauled in a Ruckle pass for a 29-yard TD. Pratt 12-8.
Pratt’s defense was able to keep the Panthers at bay from there on out. Nickerson was resorting to things like fake punts in their attempts to sustain offense, but the Greenbacks would have none of it.
In the early 4th quarter, Pratt twice had 1st and goal at the Nickerson 5 and failed to score. But the Pratt defense was up to the task and kept getting the ball back for the offense. Pratt was able to run out the clock, and so got their first win of the season 12-8.
“It feels good to get that first win. I’m happy for the kids.” Coach Cruce said after the game. “We’ve had to overcome some adversity. We made some mistakes, but we gutted it out. I’m proud of the kids and of the staff. They deserve all the credit.”
