Dr. John Henry Hoins, 92, a third-generation native of Leavenworth, passed away on Saturday September 14, 2013 in Leavenworth.
Dr. John Henry Hoins, 92, a third-generation native of Leavenworth, passed away on Saturday September 14, 2013 in Leavenworth. He was the son of John H. Hoins and Mary Ellen Larkin Hoins of Leavenworth, Kansas, born on July 18, 1921.
John was a graduate of Leavenworth Senior High in 1939. He was a graduate of Kansas State University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1943. He served as a Captain in the Army/Air Force during World War II in the North Atlantic Command and was a graduate of the Medical Field Service School. Dr. Hoins owned and operated the Dog and Cat Clinic at 1101 N. 5th street from 1947 until his retirement in 1984. He was also a Veterinary Consultant and member of the Education and Research committee for the Veterans Administration in Wadsworth, Kansas from 1960 until 1984. Dr. Hoins belonged to the Kiwanis, Elks, Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Kansas Veterinary Medical Association and the Greater Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served on the board of directors of the original Urban Renewal Board in Leavenworth, Kansas. He also served on the board of directors of the Leavenworth Country Club. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, loving to spend time outdoors.
On October 22, 1947 he was married to his beloved wife Emma Jane Duffin Hoins at the Old Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Leavenworth. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2009. She was clearly the love of his life and he missed her greatly. John and Emma Jane had four children. He is survived by Peggy Craig and husband Jim, Oskaloosa, Kan., John Hoins IV and wife Ann, Lansing, Kan., George Hoins, Leavenworth, Kan and Nancy Hoins-Bollin and husband Clayton of Leavenworth, Kan. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Tucker Craig, Audrey Craig (Jason Gnich), Eric Hoins and wife Celeste, Christopher Hoins, Jeffrey Hoins and wife Stacey, Ashley Thompson and husband Matthew, Shannon Hoins, Luke Russell and Emma Rose Bollin. He is survived by one great granddaughter, Jane Ann Hoins. He is also survived by sisters in-law Irene Collins and Agnes Giese and husband Don, and nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. The family requests memorials to be given to either John Hoins Catholic Education Scholarship Fund or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday September 19, 2013 at St. Joseph Church in Leavenworth with the Rosary at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday September 20, 2013 at St. Joseph Church.
