The Pratt Recreation Department conducted their annual NFL Punt Pass and Kick local competition Sunday afternoon at Zerger Field. 27 boys and 9 girls ages 6-15 participated in the contest that tested the youngsters’ football fundamentals.
Scores (distances) for each contestant are added for each of three events: punting, passing and kicking, and the player with the highest total score is the winner.
The weather was not particularly cooperative, as a brief downpour drenched the contestants in the middle of the competition. However, as Larry Eisenhauer of Pratt Rec said, “It is football, so we played through it. At least the sun came out at the end!”
The winners of the local contest advance to sectional competition at a time and location to be determined. “We submitted an application to host a sectional in late October, but we haven’t heard anything on that yet,” said Eisenhauer.
The top four sectional winners in each age group advance to “team championships” in Kansas City on December 1 to compete at halftime of a Chiefs game. The top 4 winners from each of the 31 NFL markets then advance to compete at Nationals, which will be held at an NFL playoff game (TBD).
Winners of the local contest are as follows. Total distances achieved by the participants are given in feet-inches along with results from each event— punt, pass, kick — in that order:
Morgan Freund 49-11 (10-1, 22-9, 17-11)
Elijan Magill 109-4 (32-1, 45-7, 31-8)
Lexi Walker 158-3 (64-1, 45-7, 48-7)
Dyllan Lunsford 183-7 (55-0, 49-4, 79-3)
Shelby Davidson 138-6 (48-0, 57-5, 33-1)
Beau Gilpin 210-9 (64-4, 66-10, 79-7)
Brayden Schnittker 188-3 (53-0, 71-0, 64-3)
Brandon Detwiler 304-0 (84-11, 121-2, 97-11)
Lexi Walker and Brandon Detwiler are repeat local winners, each taking their age group last year. Detwiler won his sectional also, but did not advance farther. The Tribune will report on the locals’ progress as they move up the NFL Punt Pass and Kick ladder.
