A stubborn bale fire kept firefighters from three districts and two counties busy for several hours Monday.

County firefighters battled a hay bale fire for several hours Monday afternoon and evening as high winds kept fanning the flames and pushed the fire through some 200 bales and threatened hundreds of acres of CRP and a residence.

Fire equipment from Preston, Township 12 and Pratt Emergency Services, along with a unit from Cunningham, fought the stubborn fire located one mile north and one and a half miles east of Cairo. The high wind pushed flames through a grove of trees and set fire to several of them.

Spontaneous combustion is a possible cause of the fire.
