Harold Russel Leak, 98, of Pratt, died Sept. 19, 2013, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community in Buhler.
Harold was born July 6, 1915 at Coats, the son of Maurice and Effie May (Shepard) Leak. Harold graduated from Pratt High School in 1933. He married Margaret Elizabeth Brant on Aug. 9, 1939, in the home of the bride at Sawyer. After 59 years of marriage, including raising four children, Margaret died Jan. 1, 1999.
Harold was a cattleman and farmed all of his life, first northwest of Pratt, then in 1945 moving to a farm five miles west of Pratt. There he farmed, wintered cattle and became an early user of irrigation until 1977 when he retired and moved to 521 Stout in Pratt. From 2006 to 2013 he resided in assisted living at Parkwood Village in Pratt. After breaking a hip in 2013, he moved to Sunshine Meadows in Buhler.
Harold was a member of First Christian Church in Pratt where he had served as board chairman, an elder, Sunday School teacher and on various ministries. He served on the Board of Education at Cullison Schools and on the Pratt County Fair Board.
Harold had several hobbies over the course of his life. He was an avid horseshoe pitcher and won a number of trophies over the years. Margaret and he enjoyed spending the late winters in Tropic Star Park in south Texas where he threw horseshoes and took up pool. Later in life, in addition to bicycling, he enjoyed dancing at the Senior Center.
Survivors include: two daughters, Sylvia Griggs of Hutchinson and Eileen Peoples and her husband Chuck, of Shawnee; two sons, Alan of Kansas City, Mo., and Gordon of Kansas City, Kan.; four granddaughters, Janelle Hanson of Andover, Andrea Mostyn of Springfield, Mo., Jessica Leak of San Leandro, Calif., and Erica Leak of Austin, Texas; three grandsons, Darrell Griggs of Sedgwick, Brant Peoples of Shawnee, and Andy Peoples of San Jose, Calif.; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charley Leak (Evelyn) of Stillwater, Okla. formerly of Pratt.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard; and four sisters, Wilma Detwiler, Arlene Berry, Evelyn Leak, and Eloise Fraizer.
Family visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 at Larrison Family Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road in Pratt. A private family burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Greenlawn Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary, with Pastor Robin Colerick officiating.
