  • Ranked 5th in 2A and sporting a 13-1 record, the Skyline volleyball team heads into the heart of their schedule riding high, coming off a recent sweep of a triangular last Tuesday with Medicine Lodge and Norwich and a home sweep against Attica and Cunningham this past Tuesday.
    Scores against Norwich were 25-18; 25-8. Scores against Medicine Lodge were just as convincing, 25-12; 25-15.
    Against Medicine Lodge, Janessa Davis had 5 kills and Kaitlyn Stark had 4. Davis and Shelby Bender each had a pair of service aces. Taylor DeWeese had 3 total blocks. Kamryn Stark had 5 assists, while Kaitlyn Stark had 10.
    Davis, Kaitlyn Stark and Betsy Giles each had 2 digs. Mycha Owens had 5 serve receives as did Bender.
    Alyssa Swonger joined the hit parade against Norwich, slamming down 4 balls. Kaitlyn Stark also had 4 kills, and Taylor DeWeese and Janessa Davis each had three in a balanced T-Bird attack. Overall kill % against K/N was 36.4%, a nice ratio.
    Bender had a couple of aces in the match, and Owens added one. Swonger was big in the middle, collecing 3 blocks. The Stark sisters again handled setting duties, Kamryn gaining 8 assists and Kaitlyn 9.
    Mycha Owens had 11 digs+receives. Bender chipped in 9 d/r and Davis added 6.
    At home Tuesday against Attica and Cunningham, the Lady T-Birds continued to roll. In the opener against Attica, the Thunderbirds started out a little slowly but still took the set 25-21. Skyline was more dominant in the closer, pounding out a 25-13 victory over the Bulldogs.
    Taylor DeWeese and Alyssa Swonger each had 6 kills and Kaitlyn Stark added 5 against Attica. Shelby Bender confounded the Bulldogs, serving up 5 aces. Swonger and Stark each had 3 blocks as the T-Birds controlled the nets.
    Kaitlyn Stark was credited with 11 assists and Kamryn Stark had 10. On the backline, Janessa Davis had 20 digs/receives and Mycha Owens had 19.
    In the nightcap against Cunningham, Skyline dominated the opening set 25-11 but Cunningham put up a good fight in the finale before falling 25-20. “I have to give credit to Cunningham,” said Skyline coach Summer Younie. “We hit and hit and hit at them and they dug us up time after time.”
    “They played really scrappy,” Younie added. “We really had to work for each point.”
    Coach Younie was happy with her girls’ performance Tuesday night. “I thought for most of the night that we played well” she said. “I was pleased with how our JV played. Compared to last weekend at South Barber, I thought we played tremendous.  The varsity was fairly consistent all night . We serve-received well and played pretty good defense.”
    The T-Birds return to the hardwood Saturday in the Kiowa County tournament with games beginning at 9 a.m.
