  • It wasn’t easy, but Lady Green defeated CKL foes Lyons and Haven in a home triangular Tuesday night. The Greenbacks took care of the Lyons Lions rather handily, but it took a clutch effort for Pratt to subdue the feisty Haven Wildcats.
The opening match against Lyons began with a service error by the visitors, then Bailey Gillig served 7 straight points for PHS before the Lions knew what had hit them.
Pratt stretched out the lead in the middle part of the game, then seemed to coast a little bit, letting Lyons close the gap. The outcome was never seriously in doubt though, and Pratt closed out the opener 25-19.
The second set was basically a foregone conclusion as the 5th ranked in 4A div II Greenbacks dispatched the Lions 25-12 to capture the match 2-0.
“Christina Fernandez did a nice job filling in for Bailey Gillig who got hit in the eye,” said PHS head coach Shelby Nesbit.
The evening’s second match was a different animal entirely from the relatively routine win in the opener, however. Haven had come to play, and the Wildcats laid a 20-25 defeat on the homestanding Frogs in the first set.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair, featuring several lead changes. In the second set, Christina Fernandez served Pratt to a 7-3 advantage, but Haven came back to knot the score at 9.
Paige Bailey connected several times at the net to lift Pratt to an 18-13 lead. The teams traded points until it was 20-15 Pratt.
Haven then went on a scary 7-0 run, aided by a questionable in/out call that went against the Greenbacks. Things looked desperate for Pratt at that point, down a set and trailing 20-22. But Destani Garten put down a spike for Pratt and Lauren Rambat  completed an outstanding hustle play from the backline to save another point for Pratt.
The score was knotted at 22 and then again at 24 before Pratt finally rallied for the next two points to take set two 26-24.
In the decider, setter Jaci Kolm did an excellent job of mixing it up, feeding a variety of Greenback hitters who responded with scores. Jenson Maydew, Amy Olson and Stonie Flemming were among the Lady Frogs who pounded balls to the floor to give Pratt a 14-11 cushion.
From there, Pratt gradually stretched out the lead, taking the third set 25-18 and the match 2-1 from the game Haven Wildcats.
“I was really proud of the way the girls fought back against Haven,”  Coach Nesbit mentioned. “We struggled the entire first set and could never get established. The second set was a dog-fight.  We were down and came back.  That took a lot of mental toughness from them.”
