The Pratt High School Debate Team captured the Central Kansas League title at the league debate competition Oct. 10 at Sterling College when they won Sweeps and First Place.

The team won out over eight other teams including the dominant teams from Sterling and Nickerson that always place strong at state. Nickerson placed second at state in 2012, said PHS Debate Coach Chris Lyman.

This is the first time PHS has taken the league debate title and considering the strength of the league, that is an impressive accomplishment.

"We have a strong league," Lyman said.

Leading the team are the team of sophomore Taylor Winkle and senior team captain Sidney Harrison who went undefeated at league with a 4-0 record. Harrison is Lyman's first four-year student and is a strong leader for the team.

"That's been a big difference," Lyman said.

Making a good showing were Austin Black and Spencer Sullivan who went 2-2 for the day against some very powerful teams, Lyman said.

Rounding out the team are alternates Klasse Gonzales and Rebekkah Wald.

Although the debate season is young, just three tournaments so far out of 10 scheduled for the season, the team is strong taking league and placing second at the Nickerson tournament.

"We've been doing pretty well so far," Lyman said.

The PHS debate tournament is the second week in December and judges are needed. Contact Lyman at the high school to volunteer.
