  • No one can say that the Skyline volleyball team is ducking tough competition. In a weekend tournament at Garden Plain, the Lady T-Birds played five matches, four of which were against teams ranked in 3A or 4A.
The Lady Thunderbirds did manage a victory against Lakin, a similarly sized and unranked school, but other than that it was a tough day for the girls in Columbia Blue. They were bested by Hesston, Andale and twice by host Garden Plain.
Garden Plain is ranked #4 in 3A, and they handed the Lady T-Birds a 25-6; 25-12 defeat to start the day.
Skyline then booted Lakin 25-21; 25-17 for their lone victory on the day.
The Thunderbirds’ next opponent was #5 in 3A Hesston, who dealt them a 25-18; 25-16 setback.
Next up for Skyline was #10-ranked in 4A division II Andale who bested the Lady T-Birds 25-20; 25-16.
In the day’s finale, the semi-finals of bracket play, Skyline was ousted in a rematch with Garden Plain. In the second meeting between the two squads, the T-Birds got closer to the Owls, losing just 25-18; 25-14.
Skyline head coach Summer Younie thought that Janessa Davis, Taylor DeWeese and Alyssa Swonger had good outings on the day. “They played solid.”
Skyline found itself mostly on the defensive all day. “We had some great defensive plays, but you can't keep freeballing the ball over the net giving the other teams an easy pass to set up their offense,” Younie observed.  “They hammered and hammered at us and we kept digging them up time and time again, but we couldn't ever get our offense going.”
