  • It was not entirely unexpected, but that doesn't make it any less painful. The Kiowa County Mavericks lived up to their billing Friday night, shutting out the Skyline Thunderbirds 46-0 at Webster Field.
Ranked high in 8-man division I, 5-0 and brimming with confidence, the Mavs pretty much had their way with the banged up T-Birds. With some key personnel still sidelined with injuries, the T-Birds were simply overmatched by the bigger, faster Mavs.
In the first quarter, three different Mavericks hit paydirt. Dylan Jacks, Trever Powell and Pancho Banman each scored for Kiowa County, staking them to a 24-0 lead at the end of the opening stanza.
Things didn't get a whole lot better in the 2nd quarter for the T-Birds. At 10:57 Jacks scored his 2nd TD of the evening.
After a Skyline punt, Trever Powell showed why he is one of the more heralded running backs in the area. He scampered untouched from near midfield on the next play from scrimmage.
It was like déjà vu all over again in the next sequence as, following another Skyline 3-and-out, Powell went the distance again (30 yards) on the very next play from scrimmage. On both plays, with well-executed blocking on the edge and another blocker leading the way, Powell was able to get into the secondary and then turn on the afterburners.
After those two blitzkrieg TDs, the score was 46-0 with 3:48 left in the half. Skyline was behind the 8-ball, because without their scoring, the 45 point rule was going to go into effect and the game would be over at halftime.
The T-Birds were unable to move the ball, however, and the Mavericks again took over the ball. Kiowa County went into the victory formation and their QB took 3 knees as time ran out in the first half. At 46-0 Kiowa County at halftime, that was the ballgame.
With the loss, the Skyline Thunderbirds fall to 2-4 on the season. They will travel to St. John next week to take on the Tigers.
