Although the Pratt High School Lady volleyball team only went 1-2 on the day, head coach Shelby Nesbit felt that the Goddard Tournament was a success for Lady Green.
“One of our main goals coming into (Saturday) was to leave as a better team than we came in,” Nesbit explained. “I was disappointed in the fact that we went 1-2 on the day, but I saw many improvements that we will take into this upcoming playoff week.”
Pratt dropped matches to Andover 19-25; 23-25 and Valley Center 16-25; 31-29; 20-25 before ending on a high note, defeating the host Goddard Lions 25-16; 25-19.
One giant step forward, in Nesbit’s view, was the defense being played by her Greenbacks. “The girls are finally starting to gel on defense,” she said. “I’ve been preaching the same thing all season about the small things on defense and it’s finally coming together.”
One concern continues to be consistency for the Greenbacks. After prevailing in the marathon second set against Valley Center, Pratt saw Valley jump out to a 0-6 lead in the decisive 3rd set. “We dug ourselves too big a hole,” Nesbit observed. “That can’t happen.”
For the most part, however, Coach Nesbit was pleased with what she saw out of the Lady Greenbacks on the day.
“They really played as a team today with enthusiasm and heart. We had too many mental errors that unfortunately cost us the matches against Valley and Andover, even though we were in control of both matches,” Nesbit said. “
“Overall today, we did a great job starting off strong. We just couldn’t finish,” Nesbit added. “We need to continue to minimize our mental errors. We’re letting them get too many points in a row and not shaking it off. I’m excited because we get another shot at Valley Center this coming Tuesday for senior night.”
PHS will host a triangular Tuesday night as their final tune-up before sub-state next Saturday.
