Charles E. Stelzer, age 91, was born on June 6, 1922 in Coats, and passed away Nov. 9, 2013, at Pratt Rehabilitation and Residence Center in Pratt.
Charles was the son of Carl E. and Leah (Head) Stelzer. He married Vivian Bergdall on April 20, 1946 in Wichita. She preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 2012.
Charles E. Stelzer was a World War II veteran. He was called to active duty on Nov. 2, 1942. He was a sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps. He was part of the 44th Mobile Reclamation Repair Squadron and served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe Campaigns. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, the EAME Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, Good Conduct medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged from military service due to the end of the war on Dec. 16th, 1945, at Camp Fannin, Texas.
Charles was a farmer/rancher around Coats. He was also a Kansas state grain inspector. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Elks Club.
Charles had two children, a son, Steven (Linda) Stelzer of Pratt, and a daughter, Teri (Allan) Pagenkopf of Zenda; seven grandchildren, Missy (Dave) Marzullo, Carly (Jon) Novotny, Craig Pagenkopf, Cambry (Cory) Riedl, Clayton (Mindy) Pagenkopf, Juston (Leslie) Stelzer and Kasi Stelzer; 14 great-grandchildren, Tilly, Phillip, Zach, Xander, Justus, Callie Jo, Cade, Sidney, Lylah, Brody, Brayden, Sara, Emma and Blayklee and two great-great-grandchildren, Preston and Matthew.
Friends may sign register book from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.,Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Rd., Pratt. Funeral service will be 10 am, Thursday at the mortuary, with John Hamm presiding. Burial will be in Coats Cemetery, Coats, Kansas.
