The Skyline girls basketball team dropped their home opener at the Thunderdome, 49-19, to St. John. The Lady Tigers broke open what had been a close game in the 2nd quarter to seize control of the game— which they never relinquished. The Lady T-Birds had trouble with St. John’s pressure defense in the first half. It was difficult for them to even get a shot on goal. It wasn’t that they were missing shots— they weren’t GETTING any shots. With largely inexperienced players handling the rock for Skyline, St. John was able to frustrate most of the T-Birds’ offensive efforts. In fact, Skyline did not convert a single field goal in the first half. 3 free throws by Mycha Owens and 2 by Jessica DeWeese allowed the T-Birds to hang with St. John in the first quarter. The Tigers weren’t able to penetrate the Skyline zone defense, and their long-range efforts were mostly off the mark. It was just 8-5 St. John after the opening stanza. In the second quarter, however, the Tigers turned up the defensive pressure a notch and began to get some easy buckets in transition off Skyline miscues. Skyline could only manage 3 more Owens free throws in Q2 while St. John went on a tear and ended up ahead 21-8 at the intermission. Skyline made an offensive adjustment at halftime and came out attacking the basket a little more aggressively. That paid off, as Skyline outscored the Tigers in Q3. Betsy Giles put in a pair of buckets and Jessica DeWeese had 2 baskets and 2 free throws. In what was Skyline’s best stretch of the game, they took care of the ball, they scored, they played solid defense, Taylor DeWeese had 7 rebounds to deny St. John any second chances, and Skyline narrowed the deficit to 30-18 to begin the final period. But the 4th quarter was a virtual replay of the 2nd as the Tigers were camped in the passing lanes and scored often in transition. Payje Orler made one from the charity stripe for the Lady Thunderbirds, but otherwise the 4th quarter was all St. John. The final was 49-19 Tigers. Skyline hosts the Pre-season Tournament beginning next Tuesday. STATS POINTS Owens 6, Giles 4, Orler 1, J. DeWeese 8 REBOUNDS T. DeWeese 7, Giles 6, Orler 5,Owens 3, Richardson 2, J. DeWeese 2
