The Skyline girls basketball team posted their first win of the season Tuesday night, defeating overmatched Stafford 48-12 in the opening round of the Skyline Pre-Season Tournament.
Stafford's girls' basketball program has struggled in recent years, and this year is no exception. Stafford only had seven girls listed on the roster, and according to head coach Mark Westbrook, one girl was out with a health issue and another was the victim of eligibility issues. As a result, the Lady Trojans took the floor against Skyline with just five girls in uniform.
It didn't take long until Skyline coach Chuck Young took the press off and substituted freely. The score was 10-0 at the four-minute mark, and 17-0 at the end of the first frame. The press had been abandoned by Skyline early on, but Stafford's inexperienced girls were still having trouble even getting any shots up in the half-court.
The Lady Trojans finally found the bottom of the net at the 6:00 mark of Q2. At halftime it was 26-7 Skyline.
Early in the second half, a Lady Trojan was whistled for her 5th foul and Stafford had to finish the game a player short. Everyone just kept playing. The Stafford girls who were left kept working hard, even if not very effectually.
The game came to end with Skyline's last bench reserves playing most of the 4th quarter, and Skyline on top 48-12. The game could have been much, much uglier but Coach Young was merciful.
All twelve Lady T-Birds suited up saw significant playing time (at least 9 minutes each), and 8 of them scored. Post Taylor DeWeese scored 7 of her game-high 11 points in the first quarter as Skyline had their zone offense clicking. Point guard Brooke Fisher hit a basket and a 3-ball to give the Thunderbirds an outside threat as well.
The second quarter was led by Kadi Richardson with 4 points as the T-Birds continued to pound the ball inside. Betsy Giles and Mycha Owens each chipped in a basket during Q2.
Giles, DeWeese and Fisher each score 4 in a balanced 3rd quarter attack and Kamryn Stark put in 5 points to lead the T-Bird reserves in the final stanza.
Seniors Taylor DeWeese (11) and Brooke Fisher (10) were both in double figures to lead Skyline in scoring. Taylor DeWeese had 8 boards and Betsy Giles 6 to lead Skyline in that category.
The victory levels the Lady T-Bird record at 1-1 on the young season. Skyline faces off against Sedgwick on Friday at 6:30 p.m. as the Pre-season Tournament continues. Sedgwick lost a close one to Pretty Prairie 27-24 in the tournament's other girls' game on Tuesday.
