Bobby D. "Griff" Griffith, age 77, died Dec. 19, 2013. He was born October 1, 1936, in Beloit, to B. F. and Avis Louise (Larzalere) Griffith. After graduation from high school in Pratt, he enrolled in the engineering school at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. While attending college he was a member of Triangle, an engineering social fraternity, and inducted into Sigma Tau and Tau Beta Pi, engineering honor fraternities.
In June of 1960 Griff graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, married his high school sweetheart, Martha Ann (Hannawald) Griffith, and joined Caterpillar Tractor Co. as a Proving Ground Test Engineer in Peoria, Illi. He continued his education at night school, graduating from Bradley University in May 1963 with a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He was a registered professional engineer in Illinois.
During his career at Caterpillar, Inc., he worked as a Proving Ground Test Engineer in Peoria, and Phoenix, Ariz. He transferred to the Aurora, Ill., plant as a senior design engineer to work on a new product, Excavators, in August 1972. Griff retired from Caterpillar April 1, 1999 after 38 years and 11 months of service.
After retirement Griff occupied his spare time volunteering for Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity, helping build 22 homes, Provena Mercy Hospital delivering Meals on Wheels, and Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora, where he and his wife were members since 1973.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; son, James (Sarah Sylvester), Carpentersville, Ill.; daughter, Annette (Brian) Ohlsen, Downers Grove, Ill.; two granddaughters Kelsey and Kyra Ohlsen; and one brother, Dr. Tom F. (Carol Moon) Griffith in Hays.
Griff's passions outside his friends and family include University of Kansas basketball, Chicago Bears football, and Caterpillar earthmoving equipment.
A memorial service will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 14 N. May St., Aurora, Ill., on Dec. 28th, at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church or Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity.
