  • Hillsboro came to town 7-0, ranked #5 in 2A. The Pratt High boys’ basketball team was not intimidated, however, and in front of a large and supportive crowd, the Greenbacks picked up their second win on the season— 48-47 over the visiting Trojans. The game was tight throughout. It was tied at 4, 9 and 11 as the teams went toe to toe in the first quarter. Christian Kurz gave Pratt the lead with a transition bucket in the final minute, and the Frogs led 13-11 after one. The second quarter saw a few more shots start to fall for Hillsboro, and they fashioned a 28-21 lead at the intermission. Pratt’s offense fell on hard times, as they could only manage an Adam Bartel bucket, a bucket and a 1+1 from Samson Kohman and a pair of freebies by Derek Barnard. Pratt chipped away at the deficit in Q3. Freshman Traik Peltier, spelling Bartel in the post, got in some good minutes with a couple of hoops and some big boards. By the end of Q3, Pratt had pulled to within 39-35. The Greenbacks drove the ball relentlessly to the hole to begin the final stanza. Although not converting baskets, they were getting fouled. Derek Barnard, Samson Kohman and Spencer Sullivan sank free throws to get Pratt even at 39-39. Meanwhile, PHS’ zone was forcing Hillsboro into tough shots and they weren’t falling. At 6:15, Traik Peltier put Pratt ahead for the first time since the mid-second quarter with a Windex bucket. Hillsboro began to apply fullcourt pressure. Adam Bartel returned to the game when Peltier picked up his 5th foul, and scored the next two baskets for the Frogs on a baseline jumper and finishing off the pressbreaker. When Kohman hit a 1-1, it was 47-43 Pratt with 1:30 to play. The Greenbacks missed a couple of free throw attempts that would have sealed the deal and Hillsboro nailed a long 3 to tie the game up with 10 seconds left. Spencer Sullivan was fouled with 5 seconds left and made 1 free throw to give Pratt the lead. Hillsboro drove the length of the floor as time expired, but their final shot rimmed off and Pratt had won, 48-47. “It was a great game,” PHS coach David Swank commented. “I’m really happy for, and proud of, our kids. They’ve really worked hard. This was a great win for them.” Freshman Samson Kohman led the Greenbacks with 16 points. “Samson grew up tonight,” Swank continued. “And Derek Barnard and Christian Kurz really handled the ball well. Hillsboro’s defensive pressure bothered us a lot last year, but the kids did a good job this year. They followed the game plan.” Next Tuesday the Greenbacks travel to Nickerson. Barnard 5, Sullivan 5, Kurz 2, Ruckle 4, Shumway 2, Samson Kohman 16, Peltier 6, Bartel 8.
