If you like high school basketball, you would have enjoyed Friday night’s game between the Pratt High girls’ basketball team and visiting Hillsboro. Although the 2A #1 ranked Lady Trojans came away with the win 46-38, 4AII #4 Lady Green played hard and well and could have just as easily been the victor with just a few different bounces. The contest between the two ranked teams took on the character of a playoff game. No quarter was asked or granted by either side. The game was tight and tense throughout, the 8-point difference at the end representing the largest lead by either team. Pratt took the early lead with seniors Amy Olson and Jenson Maydew accounting for Pratt’s first 6 points. Destani Garten converted a 1+1 and Stonie Flemming knocked down a 3 to put Pratt up 11-4 with 1:00 left in Q1. But Hillsboro struck back quickly, creating some turnovers and going on a 8-0 run to close out the opening frame. Hillsboro had stunningly taken a 12-11 lead after trailing most of the quarter. The teams traded buckets in Q2. Hailey Hook drained a 3-ball, Paige Bailey had a bucket and Maydew put in a pair of field goals. Hillsboro still led 23-20 at the intermission. Pratt chipped away after halftime. An Amy Olson trifecta got the game tied, and Kelsey Smith-Potter 1+1 kept it tied at 29 with about 3:00 to play in the third stanza. Hillsboro came up with a big steal and forced the Frogs into a turnover to go back up by 4, but a Maydew basket at the buzzer got Pratt back within two. It was 33-31 Hillsboro heading into the decisive period. Maydew got the Frogs even at 33 to start Q4. But then Pratt missed a couple of opportunities and Hillsboro went up by 4. Paige Bailey drained a free throw, then swished a 3-ball off an in-bounds play to knot the score again at 37 with 4:30 to play. Unfortunately, Pratt would only score 1 more point down the stretch and when Hillsboro got up by 4 on a 3-ball, it caused PHS to have to foul and to become desperate on the offensive end. Hillsboro was up to the challenge, knocked down their freebies, and came away with the hard-fought 46-38 win. “We played hard. We had good effort,” said PHS coach Emmanuel Adigun. “We missed a few free throws and lay-ups or the story could have been different.” Lady Green travels to Nickerson next Tuesday.
