There was a certain method to the Pratt High girls basketball team’s 57-26 dismantling of Nickerson at their place Tuesday night. Let’s go down the list of things that Lady Green usually does when they are successful: —Get off to a fast start. CHECK. The Pratt girls put up 21 points in the opening period. —Stay out of foul trouble. CHECK. No girls rode extensive pine due to foul trouble, and Nickerson wasn’t in the 1+1 until late in either half. —Play pressure defense. CHECK. The Panthers were forced into 35 turnovers on the night by the scrambling Frogs. —Get balanced scoring. CHECK. Eight Lady Greenbacks put points on the board. When Lady Green does those things, they have a chance to play with anybody. When they do those things against a lesser team, they blow them out—and that’s just what they did to the Lady Panthers. Stonie Flemming got the starting nod for the absent Hailey Hook, and all she did was swish in a pair of 3-balls to help jump-start the PHS offense in the first quarter. Also, Breann Becker scored 4 points, Jenson Maydew hit 3 field goals, Amy Olson hit a trifecta, and Destani Garten made a hoop as Lady Green raced out to a 21-8 Q1 advantage over the reeling Panthers. The 2nd stanza was more of the same. Paige Bailey had 4 points in the quarter, and when Kelsey Smith-Potter hit a basket near the buzzer, the halftime score was 34-16 Pratt. Despite the big lead, in the halftime locker room, coach Emmanuel Adigun expressed his displeasure with the girls’ defensive efforts. “I delivered the message that we needed to guard better in the second half,” Adigun explained. The girls did just that, limiting the Panthers to 3 points in the 3rd quarter. It was 47-19 heading into the final frame, and Coach Adigun got his reserves some minutes. It didn’t take long until the running clock was tripped, and the 4th quarter went by quickly. The reserves more than held their own, as Pratt outscored Nickerson 10-7 in the final period on the way to the 57-26 final score. Bailey Batman knocked down a 3 for one of the 4th quarter highlights. Kelsey Smith-Potter (11 pts) was in double digits for the night off the bench. “Our bench brings a little different style to the game,” Adigun observed. “They’re good for the team. We trust them to give us quality minutes.” Now 5-2, Lady Green travels to Lindsborg to take on Smoky Valley Fri. night. .
