The Skyline girls’ basketball team took 6th place in the 54 Classic at Cunningham Saturday afternoon, falling to Attica 35-24. Things started promisingly enough for the Lady T-Birds. Kadi Richardson scored the first 6 points from the charity stripe, and when Mycha Owens nailed a bucket, Skyline was up 8-0. Attica hit a 3 to draw to within 8-3 at the end of the first quarter, but the Thunderbirds still looked to be in good position. In the second quarter, Attica went to a zone defense. Kamryn Stark took advantage by netting a 3-ball early on, but then the T-Birds went cold. Skyline was able to get some nice looks, both from outside and on the perimeter, but the basket seemed to be spitting the ball out at times. Skyline fans would go “YAYYYYY…whuh????” as a ball that seemed destined for the bottom of the net somehow found its way back out of the cylinder. By the 3:00 mark of Q2, Attica had fought their way back to get the score tied at 11. An Attica trey with 1:00 to play in the half put them up 14-11 as Skyline’s shots still wouldn’t fall. As time ran down before intermission, Mycha Owens was able to follow her own shot for 2 to make the halftime score 14-13. The third quarter went no better for the Lady T-Birds. They were unable to score for the first 6 minutes of the frame. The longer it went where shots wouldn’t fall, the more tentative the T-Birds seemed to become— and Attica exploited the T-Birds uncertainty to go up 20-13. Finally, at 1:33 of Q3, Mycha Owens was able to rattle home a jumper, which seemed to loosen the Lady T-Birds up. Payje Orler quickly followed with a basket of her own. Unfortunately, Attica continued to score as well, and Skyline was down 24-17 to start the 4th quarter. Jessica DeWeese, Owens, and Richardson all made baskets in the fourth quarter, and Kamryn Stark chipped in a free throw, but it wasn’t enough. The determined Lady Bulldogs were able to extend their lead to eleven, 33-22, with 2:11 to play. Attica was able to maintain that margin down the stretch and came away with a 35-24 win. That gave the Bulldogs the consolation trophy of the 10th Annual 54 Classic, while the Lady T-Birds had to settle for 6th place. By way of tournament summary, the T-Birds lost in the first round to Norwich, 41-25, and defeated Kinsley 49-45 in overtime before falling to Attica in the consolation finals. In other tournament action, Kinsley downed Macksville 34-32 for 7th place: Cunningham claimed 3rd place with a 28-25 win over Pretty Prairie; and South Barber won the tournament title by defeating Norwich 48-34. The Lady T-Birds are back in action quickly, as Skyline will host Stafford on Tuesday at the Thunderdome. Skyline 8 5 4 7 24 Attica 3 11 10 11 35 Owens 8, Stark 4, Richardson 8, J. DeWeese 2, Orler 2
