Pratt High takes second in CKL wrestling

The Greenbacks stormed into the league tournament looking for a team championship out of 9 league teams present on Saturday. The numbers game caught the Greenbacks, but there is not much more that the boys could have done to win it. Pratt brought 11 wrestlers to fill 14 weight classes to compete against the #6 team in 4A, Smoky Valley, who brought 14 and the #2 team in 3A, Hoisington, brought 13 wrestlers. We held off Hoisington, but couldn't quite muster enough points to overtake Smoky Valley. With 4 champions, 3 runners-up, 2-3rd's and 2-4thplace finishes; we had a very successful day and finished 2nd as a team. 106 2nd Dylan Pelland, fr., was 2-1 on the day winning by technical fall and fall in his 1st two matchups. Dylan looked sharp all day and went out and took down the #6 in 4A, Austin Lustfield of Smoky Valley, getting caught in a bad position in the 2nd period and eventually losing by fall. For his 2nd varsity outing of the year, Dylan performed very well and we will make some adjustments in preparation for qualifying for State this week. Season record 5-2. 113 1stTrae' Foreman, sr., was 4-0 on the day. Trae' had 2 falls and a major decision on the way to a league championship. Trae' is ready to take on a very difficult Regional with 3 of the top 6 in his Regional bracket this Friday. Every match will be a challenge from here on out. Season Record 22-4. 120 1st Cesar Regalado, sr., was 4-0 on the day. Cesar was 3-0 going into the final where he expected to match up with the #6 in 3A, Marshall Schottler of Lyons. Unfortunately, for the 2nd year in a row, the decision was made to hold him out of this matchup. Cesar was looking forward to the challenge and was notified only after warming up for 2 rounds, waiting in the center of the mat for his opponent to report. Nevertheless, he is gearing up for a Regional with 3 of the top 6 in 4A in his bracket and it should be a great challenge. Season Record 21-0 126 4th Nick Lucas, fr., was 2-3 on the day. Nick will finish the season at 126 for us and we will have to take a new strategic approach for Regionals, but we will have him ready to go on Friday. Season Record 23-5 132 3rd Cody Hoy, jr., was 3-2 on the day. Winning against 2 of his 3 opponents with solid winning records. In fact, Cody turned defending State Champion, Brandon Ball of Hoisington and nearly pinned him. Cody has beaten several wrestlers in the past several weeks that have winning records as he has turned the corner. Cody is one to watch this week. 138 2nd Logan Baird, fr., was 4-1 on the day. Logan pinned his way through his first 4 opponents before meeting up with Jonathan Ball of Hoisington, the #3 ranked wrestler in 3A. Logan wrestled a good match and ended losing by decision. Logan had the kind of day we expected that he would have and hope that this catapults him into a good position at Regionals where he will have a very tough bracket to get through. Season Record 16-13 145 1st Hudson Swift, jr., was 5-0 on the day. Hudson had 3 falls and a major decision before ending the day with a 6-1 decision over Kole Clarke of Lyons. Hudson had his most complete day of the year. He wrestled smart, aggressively, and he was in control of his matches in all facets. This was a great precursor for Regionals for Hudson. Season Record 23-9 152 2nd Brendan Pribil, sr., was 3-2 on the day. Brendan pinned all of his opponents and lost twice to Petter Ekroll of Halstead. The 1st time Brendan was caught off guard and the 2nd matchup with Ekroll, Brendan was seconds away from getting a takedown for the win, losing in a nail-biter 7-6. Brendan is looking good going into Regionals. Season Record 22-9 160 1st Taylor White, sr., was 4-0 on the day. Taylor won his first 3 matches by fall before winning his championship match 3-1 over Mitchell Vincent of Lyons. Taylor made some adjustments to things through refocusing on a few of his best skill sets. Season Record 25-10 170 4th Ethan Sharp, jr., was 2-3 on the day. Ethan had 2 pins on the day and just looks better every time he hits the mat. Ethan's upside is big and we have enjoyed watching him progress throughout his 1st year in our program. 182 3rd Cooper Crump, sr. Cooper bumped up 2 weights for us to give the Greenbacks a better shot at winning a league championship. He did his best and got 2 dominant pins, lost a close match to Justin Bradley of Hoisington and he lost by fall to the #4 ranked 4A wrestler from Smoky Valley, Spencer Bird. All in all we were very pleased with Cooper's performance and attitude. Season Record 3-3. The Greenbacks are geared up for Regionals and going in we have 9 wrestlers out of 11 that are seedable in the tournament as they have records over .500. With another loaded Regional, we are excited to see how many we can take to State.
