Tatiana Grant hung a record 41-spot on #3-ranked Hutchinson, but it wasn’t enough Saturday as the Pratt Community College women’s basketball team fell 76-64 to the home-standing Blue Dragons. The Lady Beavers pushed the undefeated HCC to the limit, but at the end of the day it was the Blue Dragons who came away with the win. Early on, it appeared Hutch was going to run away and hide as they led 36-16 at one point in the first half. That was the result of a 14-2 HCC explosion that threatened to run the Beavers out of the gym. But PCC refused to back down, and scored the last 7 points before intermission to cut their deficit to a manageable 13, 36-23 Hutch. The Lady Beavers chipped into the lead as the second half progressed. Over time, PCC outscored Hutch 30-24, and when Grant nailed a 3-pointer, the lead was down to 4, 60-56 Hutch. With 4 minutes to play Hutch’s cushion was still just 4, 62-58. Although unaccustomed to being tested late in games, the Lady Dragons responded down the stretch. They outscored Pratt 14-6 over the final minutes and escaped with the 76-64 win in a game that was closer than the final score might suggest. Hutch hit the shots and got the stops they needed in the late-going. Hutch won the battle on the boards 34-31. PCC committed 25 turnovers to 19 for HCC. Pratt was just 4/16 25% from 3-point land. If a couple more of those fall, the game gets pretty interesting. Hutchinson coach Jon Ontjes had words of praise for Tatiana Grant, whose 41 points eclipsed the record for points scored against HCC. “She’s an unbelievable scorer,” he said.
