  • The Pratt Community College basketball teams met different fates in the opening round of the Region VI tournament Saturday. The men advanced with a convincing 93-71 win over Labette at home while the women fell to Independence on the road 78-69 to end their season. The Lady Beavers appeared to be in control at halftime, up 39-24, but the Lady Pirates rallied in the second half, outscoring Pratt 54 to 30 after intermission. Indy got on a roll down the stretch and PCC was unable to rein them in. The Pirates turned up the defense a notch, began getting to all the loose balls, and crashing the boards. Meanwhile, PCC seized up with disastrous consequences. “We played really tight and tense in the second half,” head coach Stephanie Thompson observed. “At halftime, I told the kids to just stay loose and enjoy playing in the second half, but we weren’t able to.” PCC was still ahead 63-61 at the 2:31 mark, but Indy went on a 17-6 run over the final couple of minutes to grab the game 78-69. The men raced out of the gate against Labette, up 31-19 at the media time-out, and maintained the 22-point lead—plus or minus a little— for the rest of the contest. Point guard Javis Flynn had the Beavers’ offense clicking as he dished out 8 assists in the first half alone. The Beavers were, dare I say, en fuego from the arc. Rob Davis hit 1, Kaion Seales 2 and Taylor Schieber 3 trifectas to lift Pratt to a 55-30 halftime advantage. The Beavers cooled off from long range in the second half, but they continued converting from the field (51% on the night) and the charity stripe (91% on the night.) Pratt outrebounded Labette 42-33 led by Kevin Allen with 9 and Merrill Holden with 7. Labette made a little bit of a run in the second half, but the lead was never in real jeopardy. Pratt was able to close out the Cardinals 93-71 and advance to the Region VI quarterfinals at Wichita Thursday.
