  • Lady Green moves into sub-state finals vs Russell

  • The Pratt High girls’ basketball team had met Nickerson twice before this season, with Lady Green taking both contests by 30+ points. There was little reason to think the third match-up would turn out any differently when the two squads met in the opening round of the 4AII sub-state in Russell Thursday night. There were no surprises as Pratt came away victorious, 62-22.

The Greenbacks were clicking on all cylinders from the opening tip-off. It was 14-0 Pratt with 5 seconds left in the first period before the Panthers were able to break into the scoring column on a free throw. The frame ended with Lady Green in total command 14-1.
Pratt was even more dominant in the second quarter. The defense, which in the first half had stifled the Panthers, now got involved in the offense as the transition game began working for the Greenbacks. In one brief sequence, four consecutive Nickerson turnovers resulted in 8 quick points for Lady Green.
Amy Olson and Paige Bailey took turns d’ing up the Panthers best player, Paige Stewart, and held her to 5 points on the night. Hailey Hook was a menace, pocketing a half-dozen steals in the first half alone by camping in the Nickerson passing lanes. Bre Becker pressured on the perimeter and converted some breakaways. “The girls did a tremendous job of coming out and playing hard,” head coach Emmanuel Adigun said. “They really guarded well.”
Just as importantly, the Greenbacks were able to apply pressure defensively without fouling. “I told the girls we needed to play with discipline,” Coach Adigun explained. “We needed to play sound defense without reaching, which leads to fouling.” The Lady Frogs did just that. Nickerson never got into the 1 & 1, and only managed 8 shots on goal in the first half of which only 3 were successful.
The Pratt scoring came from both inside and outside. Jenson Maydew led all scorers with 15, and Destani Garten added 12 as PHS dominated in the paint. As the lead mounted, the Pratt girls’ began stroking confidently from outside also, as wings Stonie Flemming and Kelsey Smith-Potter combined for 11 points.
At halftime, Pratt was up 39-9. After Q3 it was 52-11. With the clock running, Pratt’s reserves manned the floor in the 4th quarter, holding their own with the Panthers as the Greenbacks claimed the 62-22 win.
PHS got just what they wanted to out of the game. “By us getting ahead, I was able to get some good experience for my bench players and keep my rotation rested,” Adigun mentioned.
Reserves Bailey Batman, Hannah Coates and Samaria Kohman saw playing time in the first half, then played some in Q3 and finished out the game in the final stanza. Each had some nice moments. Kohman worked the give-and-go with Kelsey Smith-Potter, and later set a nice screen so Bailey Batman could attack the basket for a lay-up. Coates had 5 points in the 4th quarter as PHS kept pace with the Panthers down the stretch.
Page 2 of 2 - On the night, PHS shot 24/55 from the floor, outrebounded Nickerson 30-14, forced Nickerson into 23 turnovers and had 11 steals. Lady Green were also credited with 13 assists, as unselfish basketball resulted in lots of easy baskets. “It’s so much fun to watch the girls when they’re playing together,” Adigun concluded.
The win puts the Pratt girls in the sub-state finals Saturday night at 6:00 against host Russell, who turned Larned aside 44-37 in the opening round. The winner of that one will advance to the 4AII State Tournament in Wichita next week.
