Pratt High School track teams battle damp and cold to score high at Nickerson Invitational.
The Nickerson Invitational track and field meet is traditionally the first one of the season for the Pratt High thinclads, and it has a reputation for being held in some less-than-ideal weather. This year was no exception as cold and damp conditions greeted the Greenbacks on Thursday night.
But the Pratt High tracksters were undaunted. “I was really proud of the kids,” head coach Derek Liggett said. “The weather was not delightful, but our kids didn’t complain. They were ready to compete. Our times and distances weren’t great due to the conditions, but the kids really competed.”
Paige Bailey had a four-medal day to lead Lady Green, placing in the 100m, 200m, LJ and 4x400. Jenson Maydew took gold in both shot and discus; and her teammates Samaria Kohman and Kayla Baer went 2-3 to give PHS a clean sweep of the girls discus.
Adele Loomis and Halle Helfrich went 1-2 in both the 1600m and 800m, with Loomis taking the 800 and Helfrich winning the 1600. “Those girls had a good day,” distance coach Kathy Hitz understated. The pair also each pocketed gold in the 4x400, teaming up with Bailey and Hannah Coates.
“Joseph Loomis (fourth) had a nice race in the mile,” Hitz continued, “ and (senior) Zach Will took third in the two-mile even though this was his first high school track meet ever. I was really happy for him.”
Morgan Strong and Chloe Cannata went 2-3 in the pole vault on what vaults coach Scott Powell referred to as a brutal day. “It was cold and wet,” he said. “The kids were jumping right straight into the wind. Their hands were cramping up making it hard to grip the pole. The runway was wet and slick. Not a good day to vault.”
Ryan Landry picked up three silver medals for the boys: 400m; 4x400 (with Hunter, Caldwell and Reh) and 4x800 (with Loomis, Reh and Will).
Nick Koler (100m) and Jerod Theis (shot) took home bronze medals. Derek Barnard chipped in a fifth in his 300mIH debut.
