  • The Pratt High baseball team split a triangular with Word of Life and Medicine Lodge Tuesday. The Greenbacks fell to Word of Life 13-3 in six innings before run-ruling the host Indians 11-1 in five innings.
Word of Life is a private school in Wichita that in recent years has developed a reputation for putting a good baseball team on the field. According to PHS head coach Pat Stivers, Word boasts several international players and already has about 20 games under its belt this season.
“But,” Stivers said, “They’re fun to play.”
The young Greenbacks (who start several underclassmen) gave a decent account of themselves against the Fire early on, leading 2-0 after two innings. Jacob Kurz and Dakota Venard both singled and scored in the first inning. Sean Noel scored in the 5th after reaching with a knock, but that was all the offense the Frogs could muster, and they fell 13-3.

In the nightcap, the Greenbacks got things rolling as they scored early and often against Medicine Lodge. Kurz and Noel each touched the plate three times, Venard scored twice, and Brett Forshee, Will Fellhoelter and Brandon Ruckle each tallied once. Fellhoelter pitched well, giving up just one run over 5 innings of work.

“Our pitchers— Kurz and Noel in the opener and Fellhoelter in the nightcap— did a good job keeping the ball down all night. They just kept throwing ground ball after ground ball,” Coach Stivers concluded.
The Greenbacks travel Thursday to face the Lyons Lions in a CKL match-up.
