  • On Friday, the Greenback track and field squad faced off against the wind and 10 other schools at the Keith Blide Invitational in St. John. The girls took 2nd with 119 points behind only Ellinwood (132). The boys took third with 75 points. LaCrosse won the boys division with 117. There were some nice highlights from both the Frogs and Lady Green.
“On the girls side, Jenson (Maydew) set another PR in shot with a throw of 42-5. Going into this week that would be the 4th best throw in the state this year and 2nd best in 4A,” head coach Derek Liggett mentioned. Samaria (Kohman) has been very consistent lately in shot as well. This is her 3rd straight meet to throw over 34 feet.”
“We really wanted to run some good relays on the track and the girls 4x8 (Halle Helfrich, Hannah Coates, Christine James, Adele Loomis) and 4x4 (Helfrich, Coates, Loomis, Paige Bailey) both looked good and had much improved times compared to the Ellsworth meet,” Liggett continued.
Helfrich performed the difficult 400m/800m double, and “looked good doing it with the quick turnaround,” according to Coach Liggett. Fellow middle- distancer Adele Loomis also had a nice day. “Adele ran two very strong 800s, and then finished the day with a very good split in the 4x4.”
“Paige (Bailey) had a good day turning in a very solid 200m time and competed well in both the 100m and long jump,” Liggett added.
“Jaci (Kolm) is going to get a pretty solid mark in triple jump shortly. She has jumped over 32’ in her first two meets, but there’s more there than that,” Liggett expressed. “Kayla Baer also set a good PR in javelin, taking 5th.”
Golds were won by the 4x400; 4x800; Jenson Maydew in the shot; Samaria Kohman in the discus and Chloe Cannata in the pole vault.

“The guys also had some very good things happen,” Coach Liggett said. “Nick (Koler) looked the best he has all year in the 100m/200m. He got 3rd to a couple of very talented runners.”
Page 2 of 2 - “The 4x8 (Joseph Loomis, Chance Reh, Josh Ash, Ryan Landry) and 4x4 (Ryan Landry, Hunter Kaufman, Samson Kohman, Jacob Caldwell) both had their best times of the year and posted good marks for the midpoint of the season,” Coach Liggett continued. “Both relays are showing progress and look encouraging heading down the home stretch.”
Loomis led off the 4x8 with a PR split, then turned in a solid mile and a gutsy 800. “He looks stronger every week,” Liggett observed. “Landry ran solid splits in both relays as well. He is making some good progress and is a big key to our success in both of them.”
Dustin McGraw had a good day matching his PR in high jump to take 3rd and setting a new PR in javelin to bring home second. Josh Powell took 2nd in pole vault. “Josh has been very consistent the past three weeks with jumps of 10-6 or 11,” Coach Liggett mentioned.
The triple jump was contested directly into the wind, so distances were not particularly impressive, but Shawn Ramos and Derek Barnard “both competed well, which is what we wanted to see,” “Liggett added.
