  • An axiom in sports is, “You gotta take what they give you.” The Pratt High School softball team did just that Tuesday afternoon in sweeping a pair of games from visiting Halstead at the Green Sports Complex. PHS took game one 10-0, then the nightcap 10-2.
In game one, the game got into the middle innings with neither team being able to score. At that point, head coach Mike Forshee began having his girls take what they were being given. Due to a series of unfortunate occurrences, Halstead could only field 8 players for their games with the Greenbacks.
That meant that, in addition to absorbing an automatic out each time through the batting order, the Dragons only had two outfielders. With the wind shrieking in from right field, that didn’t pose as big a problem for Halstead as it normally would have, as the elements almost acted as an extra fielder for both defenses.
However, the short-handed Dragons were forced to have their 2B-man cheat toward right field, which was what they had chosen to leave open. That meant that they were going to have difficulty defending the bunt, as their 2B now had a long trek to get to 1B to cover when the 1B left to cover the bunt.
Recognizing the bind Halstead was in, the Greenback girls finally broke onto the scoreboard via the bunt in the fifth inning to break a 0-0 tie. The first two Pratt batters laid down bunts, and on the second bunt, when the Halstead throw went up the right field line, there was nobody home to back up the play and the Lady Greenbacks took advantage. Greenbacks were able to race around the bases until Halstead finally tracked the ball down.
Taking the lead seemed to loosen Lady Green’s bats up, and from there they went on to post numerous extra-base hits— hitting it where there were no Dragon defenders. By the time the dust had cleared, Lady Green had put 10 runs on the board in the late innings to take game one 10-0.
Brittnee Hill picked up another win for PHS, shutting out the Dragons.
In game two, Pratt won comfortably 10-2.
The Lady Greenbacks improved to 10-2 with the wins. They will host Hillsboro Friday.

In JV action last weekend, Lady Green won three games to take first place in the Haven Tournament. They started off besting Kingman 12-11 with Brooke Theis picking up the win for PHS. Cheyene Wiese was 4-4; Liz Amaro, Reiley Perez and Morgan Schmidt were each 3-3; and Saige Twiner and Lexi Lanterman each had a pair of knocks.
In game two, the JV handled Smoky Valley 11-4 with Luz Acosta on the mound. Morgan Schmidt and Natalie Bare were each 2-2.
Page 2 of 2 - In the finals, Paige Huber pitched Lady Green to victory, 9-1 over Haven. Cheyene Wiese was 2-3 with an inside-the-park homer; Reiley Perez was 2-3; and Saige Twiner and Haley Mitchell each clubbed doubles.
“I was really proud of how well the kids played this weekend,” said Crystal Kohman-Smith, PHS asst. coach. They worked hard to be tourney champs.” .
