  • The Pratt High School baseball team split a doubleheader with Hillsboro on Friday night at Green Sports Complex. The Trojans won the opener 9-4, but the Greenbacks took a wild game two 4-3.
The Trojans had one big inning, a 5-run-on-6-hits fifth frame, to seize control of game one. That put them up 6-0. PHS got some back in the bottom of the fifth. Seth Simmons and Hayden Schrag both walked with one out, then Dakota Venard hit a fly ball into left-center that might have been caught but wasn’t. Brandon Ruckle followed with a blast to the right field wall for a triple and the Frogs had 3 runs.
However, Hillsboro picked up 3 more runs in their final two at-bats and led 9-3 going into the bottom of the seventh. PHS kept battling. Schrag singled into right field, and walks to Jacob Kurz, Dakota Venard loaded the bases. After two fly-outs, Brett Forshee picked up an RBI by drawing yet another base-on-balls— but that’s where the Frog threat ended and Hillsboro had game one 9-4.
Sean Noel took the mound for Pratt in game two and pitched a gem, scattering 6 hits. All 3 runs against him were unearned due to Greenback defensive miscues. “Sean was in control the whole game,” PHS head coach Pat Stivers stated. “Our defense let him down. We had five sophomores in the infield in game two, and it showed at times.”
Pratt went ahead 1-0 in inning two, a BB RBI by Kurz pushing home Will Fellhoelter who had walked to start the inning and advanced on a double by Devon Evert. Hillsboro tied the game in the top of the third, but then Pratt went back ahead with a run in the fifth, Noel helping his own cause with a double.
Leading 2-1 with 2 outs in the top of the 7th, Pratt committed 3 errors leading to 2 Trojan runs. It looked like it was going to be a heartbreaking loss, but PHS refused to go down. Schrag began the PHS seventh reaching on an error. Kurz followed with a single and Venard walked to load the bases with nobody out. Ruckle walked to drive in Schrag and a wild pitch allowed Kurz to race home with the winning run. 4-3 Pratt in a wild finish.
