The Skyline track and field teams faced their sternest test of the season to date Friday at Kiowa County. The field of 15 schools— led by track powerhouses Ellinwood who won both divisions and Kiowa County who took both runners-up— was both deep and talented.
With 20+ athletes in each running event, and 30+ athletes in some of the field events, medals and points were going to be hard to come by. Anyone who won a medal or even scored points at the gigantic meet would know they had earned it.
Skyline’s girls managed 27 points for 8th place while the boys’ squad tallied 12, which was good for 11th place.
Head coach Summer Younie was not willing to place the blame for the T-Birds’ lower-than-usual placings entirely on the meet’s difficulty. “It was a really tough meet, but we just didn't compete very well, either,” she said. “As a whole, we just kind of fell apart.”
“It must have been the nice weather,” Younie joked. “We're just not used to it!”
The highest place earned by the Lady Thunderbirds was a silver medal in the 100m (13.0) by Jessica DeWeese. The 4x800 relay took home the bronze with an 11:38 effort. Brooke Fisher, Abby Giles, Betsy Giles and Madalyn Owens each took a carry on that one.
Betsy Giles placed 6th in both the hurdle races: 100HH (18.28) and 300LH (54.43). Brooke Fisher got 4th in the 3200m (13:00) and 7th in the 1600m (6:03).
Taylor DeWeese cleared 4-7 to take 4th in the high jump. Jessica DeWeese sailed 14-7.5 to take 5th in the long jump.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lady T-Birds was the sprint relay. Mycha Owens, Bailey DeClue, Taylor DeWeese and Payje Orler teamed up for a 6th (59.81) in the 4x100. The 4x400 (Betsy Giles, Bailey DeClue, Jessica DeWeese, Madalyn Owens) took 7th (4:48).
The top placing claimed by the T-Bird boys on the evening came in the 4x800 relay. Tony Ibarra, Roman Ibarra, Lucas Cason and Colin Kumberg pocketed the bronze in that event with a 9:12.
Daniel Hacker took 4th in the javelin with 136-11.5. A trio of 6ths rounded out the scoring for Skyline. Roman Ibarra was 6th in the 2-mile (11.04) and the mile (4:54) and Dustin Weber scored in the 110HH (17.34).
A few T-Birds finished just out of the money in 7th: Tony Ibarra 800m (2:21); Blake Lee discus 122-08; and Dustin Weber high jump 5-5.
Coach Younie was pleased that some of her charges notched personal bests, even if that didn’t always translate into high meet placings. “Abby Giles ran 56.9 in the 300LH; Roman Ibarra had a PR in the 1600 with 4:54; Dan Hacker PR’d in disc and javelin and Blake Lee set new personal marks in all three throws. Also, Katherine Ghumm set personal records in the shot and disc,” Younie mentioned.
The Thunderbird track teams are back in action Tuesday May 6th at another sizable meet, the Hodgeman County Invitational.
