  • Richard Michael “Mike” Richard, 66, of Preston, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014.
    Mike was born on Jan. 1, 1948 in Higgins, Texas to Rollin Charles “Pat” Richard and Zelda Mae “Dolly” Coykendall Richard. He attended May, Laverne and Buffalo, Oklahoma schools and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1966. He started college at Northwestern State College in Alva, Oklahoma and then was drafted into the United States Army in March of 1967.
    As an infantryman he was awarded two Bronze Stars for bravery and three Purple Hearts for being wounded in battle in Vietnam. After serving his country, Mike went back to Northwestern State College and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education.
    On December 27, 1968 he married Cheryl Ann Schuster in Slapout, Oklahoma. Mike and Cheryl had two children together, Mark and Lori Ann. Later they were divorced.
    Mike was preceded in death by his parents.
    Mike leaves as his survivors a son, Mark Richard and wife, Stephanie, of Preston; his daughter, Lori Ann Richard of Emporia, and grandchildren, Mackenzie Lahman of Emporia, Shelby Richard, Kayla Baer and Zachary Richard of Preston. Other survivors include siblings, Patricia Ann Krier and her husband Gerald of Ashland, Marilyn Sue Jones and husband Wayne of Slapout, Oklahoma, Barbara Jo Davis and husband Harry of Buffalo, Oklahoma and James Robert Richard and wife Christina of Buffalo, Oklahoma and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
    At the request of Mike, a private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Mike Richard Memorial Fund in care of Mark Richard, 208 W. 8th, Preston, KS, 67583.
