  • Jessica DeWeese earned the 7th place medal in long jump to pace Thunderbird entries in last weekend’s State track and field meet in Wichita.
The sophomore was making her second appearance at the Big Dance. Her 16-0 was good enough to place her on the medal stand in that event. DeWeese also qualified in the 100m, but did not quite make it out of prelims. Bothered by a nagging leg injury all season, her 13.47 was good for 9th place— just a few hundredths away from qualifying for the finals and a medal.
Distance runner Brooke Fisher wound up an outstanding prep career with appearances in both the 1600m and 3200m. She took 10th in the 3200m (13:06) and 14th in the 1600m (6:05).
Three Thunderbird boys competed at State. Roman Ibarra took 12th in the 3200m (10:53) and 11th in the 1600m (4:44). Brother Tony Ibarra also made it to State the 1600m, taking 14th in 4:56. To round out the T-Bird competitors, Daniel Hacker took 16th in the javelin with a toss of 141-06.
