  • Pratt man charged with first degree murder in death of infant

  • A Pratt man made his first court appearance in Pratt County District Court Wednesday, June 11, after he was arrested and charged with first degree murder, child abuse and child endangerment.
    Joseph Sponaugle, 27 of Pratt, was charged with murder in the first degree for allegedly killing A.M.S., date of birth 9-30-13, according to a criminal complaint provided by the State Attorney General’s office.
    On Jan. 18, the Pratt Tribune ran an obituary for Sponaugle’s daughter, Aurora M. Sponaugle with a birth date of 9-30-13.
    He was also charged with abuse of a child, A.M.S. date of birth 9-30-13, for allegedly shaking a child under the age of 18 resulting in great bodily harm to the child.
    A third charge of endangering a child was also filed for allegedly putting a child under the age of two in a situation where the child’s life, body or health was endangered.
    He remains in jail on $1 million bond and no date has been set for his next court appearance, according to a press release from the state attorney general’s office.
    Pratt County District Attorney Ken Van Blaricum has requested the State Attorney General’s Office to prosecute this case.
    Sponaugle is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
