Aug. 26, 1920: Eight days after being ratified, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution takes effect, giving women the right to vote.
Number to Know
1984: The year the last holdout state, Mississippi, officially ratified the 19th Amendment. Since the amendment had gone into effect after passing with a two-thirds majority in 1920, the ratification vote was symbolic.
