August 25, 2017: SOAP #2822: Jeremiah 37-39; Psalm 79; 2John

Scripture:  Jeremiah (NIV) 39:16 “Go and tell Ebed-Melech the Cushite, 'This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfil my words against this city through disaster, not prosperity. At that time, they will be fulfilled before your eyes. 17 But I will rescue you on that day, declares the LORD; you will not be handed over to those you fear.  18 I will save you; you will not fall by the sword but will escape with your life, because you trust in me, declares the LORD.'”

Observation:      The scripture does not give the details of how this Ethiopian came to have a unique place in King Zedekiah's court.   Surely God had placed him there.   In Jeremiah 38 we read how Ebed-Melech had played an important part in saving Jeremiah's life.   And now as God is bringing judgment on the nation of Israel, God specifically singles out one individual to be spared, this foreigner who trusted God and had taken action on behalf of God's prophet.

Application:   Two applications I see:   First, God has key people placed around me (and individuals who trust Him) to give council and assistance in crisis situations.   He will assure that I am able to carry out His ministry.   Second, in times of judgment, God can single out individuals for His protection and provision.

Prayer:     Heavenly Father, it is a comfort to know that you are aware of individuals and can care for them even when you are pouring out your judgement around them.   I trust you!  Amen
