February 11, 2018: SOAP #2992:  Leviticus 15-17: Acts 18

Scripture:  Acts (NIV) 18:4 Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. 5 When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

1Corinthians (NIV) 2:1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Observation:   In 1Corinthians 2, Paul gives a personal description of the same time described in Acts 18.   In Corinth, the emphasis of Paul's ministry does not seem to be on healings and miracles.   (I would be surprised if no healings and miracles took place while Paul was present in Corinth, but none are specifically mentioned in the scriptures.) The work of the Holy Spirit is seen in the anointing on the word.

When the Word of God is preached and taught under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, there is great convincing power.   Faith arises in the hearts of the hearers.   The convicting presence of the Holy Spirit compels them to obey.   Miracles may confirm, but not replace the Word.

Application:   I must depend on the ministry of the Holy Spirit to reveal the word in my heart and to anoint it to those who read.

Prayer:     Holy Spirit, anoint these SOAP devotionals to bring about your desired results in my life and in those who read.   Amen
